An Art Therapy Approach to Support Women

in perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause

As our bodies go through changes, life can start to feel pretty full—full of shifting emotions, new responsibilities, and lots of questions about what’s coming next.

Art therapy can be a gentle, creative way to help us move through all of this. Whether it’s painting, drawing, working with clay or exploring colour, it offers a supportive space where you can slow down, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves.

"ART IS THERAPEUTIC – IT SAYS WHAT WORDS SOMETIMES CANNOT"

Easing emotional ups and downs
Hormones might be shifting, sleep may be a bit all over the place, and your emotions can feel closer to the surface. Creating with colour and form gives you a peaceful way to process what you’re feeling—without needing to make perfect sense of it first.

Rekindling your energy and spark
It’s common to feel tired or stretched thin during this stage of life. The steady, calming rhythm of making art can help refill your inner reserves and gently reconnect you with your energy and enjoyment.

Finding moments of calm in a busy life
With family, work, and caring for others, it’s easy to lose touch with your own centre. Art therapy offers a grounding pause—time where your hands, breath, and attention settle into the present moment.

Exploring who you are and what you want next
Menopause can be a profound turning point. You might be rethinking your role, your priorities, or what you want this next chapter to look like. Art therapy gives you a soft, creative space to explore these questions and rediscover a clearer sense of yourself.

We’ve created a signature program designed specifically to support women through this important transition—and to help you navigate it with curiosity, compassion, and confidence.

Our program has been developed exclusively by women on their menopausal journey.

Using our evidence-informed Creative Menopause Method™ our programme transforms menopause into a creative awakening, helping women release old identities, reconnect with inner wisdom, and create a purposeful next life chapter.

We draw on the neuroscience of creativity, nervous system regulation and uses mind-body approaches.

Non‑clinical art therapy—often called therapeutic art‑making or “art as therapy”—is all about using creativity as a way to explore your thoughts, unwind, and support personal growth. Instead of focusing on diagnosis or formal treatment, it centres on the simple calming effect of making art, letting the creative process itself do the healing work through self-expression.

Why Non-Clinical Art Therapy?

Non‑clinical art therapy is about using creativity to relax, express yourself, and get a bit of mental breathing space. There’s no diagnosis or heavy therapy stuff involved. It’s just you, some art materials, and the chance to unwind, explore your thoughts, and feel better through the simple act of making art.

Process-Oriented Art

This moves the goalposts from "making something pretty" to "noticing how it feels to make it." This has some real beneits.

Stress and Anxiety Relief: Making art can help calm your mind. It lowers stress hormones and helps you get into a relaxed “flow state,” where you’re focused on creating instead of worrying.

Easier Emotional Expression: Art gives you a safe way to express feelings—especially big or confusing ones like anger, sadness, or shame. This is especially helpful for children or anyone who finds it hard to put emotions into words.

Boosts Confidence: Finishing an art project can create a real sense of achievement. That feeling of “I made this!” can help build confidence and self‑esteem.

Supports Trauma Healing: Art therapy can help people work through difficult experiences without needing to talk about them directly. Because it doesn’t rely on language, it can offer a gentler, safer way to explore painful memories.

Our Progarmme

The Creative Menopause Method through our Wise Woman Within programme uses creative activities to support personal reflection and wellbeing. It is not psychotherapy, counselling, or clinical art therapy. If you are currently experiencing significant emotional distress or mental health challenges, please seek support from a qualified mental health professional.

Why art as therapy

Why art heals

Art has emotional and mental health benefits.

Creating art activates the brain:

It releases dopamine – our feel-good hormone.

It reduces cortisol – a stress hormone.

It stimulates our right brain – where we find intuition and emotions.

How art supports mental health:

Art helps process emotions.

Reduces anxiety and stress.

Builds confidence and identity.

Encourages mindfulness and flow.

You do not need to be an artist to heal through art.

You simply need to start creating.
